Leading experts in gender studies and Thai Sign Language (TSL) participated in a landmark seminar on the development of TSL terminology for LGBTQI+ gender identities, held from March 6–9, 2025, at Mida Hotel Ngamwongwan, Nonthaburi Province.
The distinguished speakers included Assistant Professor Dr. Jare Singhakowin, Dean of the School of Social Development and Management Strategy; Khun Caesar Ritthiwong, Deputy Director of the Office of Human Rights and Sustainability at the Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand and a master’s student in Social Development Administration; as well as TSL experts Mr. Wittayut Bunnak, President of the National Association of the Deaf in Thailand, and Mr. Anucha Rattanasin, Board Member of the Thai Deaf Foundation.
Organized by the Deaf Thai Rainbow Club (DTRC) and supported by the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Fund, the seminar brought together 50 deaf participants from across four regions of Thailand. Participants collaboratively developed 100 Thai Sign Language terms related to LGBTQI+ identities—some of which are newly introduced terms, particularly in the areas of health and gender, that had not previously existed.
This initiative not only advances linguistic inclusion but also reflects Thailand’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
The seminar marks a significant milestone in promoting equal access to information, communication, and gender expression for LGBTQI+ deaf individuals. It also represents an important step forward in fostering inclusivity, enhancing societal understanding of gender diversity, and ensuring that Thai Sign Language reflects and respects the dignity of all individuals.
